5  Multiplex Networks

5.1 Introduction

In many social situations, actors are connected by more than one type of relationship. For example, two individuals might be co-workers, friends, and members of the same voluntary association. A network that captures multiple types of relations among the exact same set of actors is called a multiplex network.

5.2 The Importance of Multiplexity

Understanding multiplexity is important because different types of ties can interact, reinforce, or conflict with one another. When ties are multiplex, they tend to be stronger and more resilient. Analyzing them purely as a single type of relationship can miss the complexity of the underlying social structure.
